This news article was about a man, John Butner, who, while high on crack cocaine, steals a 7up truck and leads the police on a high speed chase through San Franando Valley in Los Angeles. The police reported 7up cans flying from the truck like "missels" which broke through nearby windows and damaged objects in their path. Butner finally stopped the truck, got out, and ran down the street where he hid in a tree where police finally caught him. While this story seems very intense, it was presented on the news with a lighthearted attitude, and Butner was laughing at the things he did in a carefree way. Butner's tone as well as the reporter's tone, made this intense story humerous.

Visual Rhetoric: Emphasis
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwi8_rRq8os
Emphasis is used in visual rhetoric to accent the appearance of an object or idea to catch the audience's eye and better persuade them to agree with some point of view. Things can be emphasized in many ways, including contrast, color, and isolation. Using emphasis in rhetoric allows the audience to focus on the point being made. The example above, of an ipod advertisment, uses emphasis by color, contrast, and isolation to force the audience to focus on the person and their actions as a result of using an ipod.

Visual Argument Image

This advertisment was from the back cover of the swimming magazine Splash. It is an advertisment for the Mutual of Omaha Swim Clinic, giving swimmers the chance to improve their swimming skills in the midst of olympians. The image of the one fish jumping out of its old tank, which is full of fish, into its own larger tank shows what it is like to break out in the swimming world. The ad sends the message that most people stay where they are comfortable and do not attempt to venture out of their comfort zone, but the few people who do, in this case the fish, are rewarded with better results. This ad uses pathos to get peoples attention, since people want to stand out in their respective sport more than anything in the world. It also uses ethos, since it shows how hard people must work to get to this point, and hard work is an ethical value. This ad does a good job communicating what one must do to stand out.

Photo Essays
The first photo essay, of prisons, viewed in class had very little words or explaination about what the pictures represented. All of the pictures in the first essay were very desolate and they were all in balck and white, many containing signs within the pictures. The black and white colors and the isolation of the pictures strengthened the desolate mood of the essay.
The second essay, Covering Conflict, was an audio essay which showed corresponding pictures as a story of conflict was told. The images "make you think of the world you live in" and they show change in th world. This essay provokes strong emotions through the haunting images and the solemn words which go along with it. (magnuminmotion.com)
The third essay, of the Myanmar protest, was a picture slide show, like a powerpoint, depicting the images with a sentence caption on the side. The colors in the images strengthened the photo essay and the sentence on the side give me greater insight into the photo's meaning.
